AC Repair in Moundville

Most people outside West Alabama know Moundville for the earthen mounds at the archaeological park on the edge of town, near the Black Warrior River. For the folks who live here, it is a small town south of Tuscaloosa down Highway 69, with porches, shade trees and a lot of homes that have been cooled by the same kind of system for decades. We drive down regularly to repair air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces in those homes.

Being this close to the river shapes how a system behaves. The air stays humid most of the year, and an AC in Moundville spends a good part of its run time wringing water out of the house. When that goes right, the house feels dry and comfortable at 75. When it goes wrong, the house feels clammy at 72, the drain line clogs and the closet floor gets wet.

The homes and the systems in them

Moundville has a lot of older single-story homes, many with a front porch, a crawlspace and a central system that has been replaced once or twice on top of the original ductwork. Some still run units charged with R-22, the refrigerant that stopped being produced in 2020. A leak on one of those systems is a real decision, because recharging it costs more every year and the unit is usually near the end of its life anyway.

Many homes here have moved to heat pumps, which makes sense with mild winters where most nights stay above freezing. The tradeoff is that one unit carries the house year-round, so a failure means no heat and no AC at the same time. Other houses keep a gas or electric furnace with a separate outdoor AC. We work on all of them, and the first job on any visit is figuring out what is actually wrong rather than reaching for the most expensive answer.

Four months of hard running

From late May into September, temperatures here sit near 90 most days, and the air conditioner runs almost all day. That is a lot of hours on a compressor, a fan motor and a capacitor. Parts that were borderline in spring tend to fail in July, usually on the hottest afternoon of the week.

A little prevention goes a long way down here. Clearing the drain line, cleaning the outdoor coil and testing the capacitor before summer catches a lot of the failures we would otherwise see in July. If your system has not been looked at in a year or two, a spring tune-up before the long run is worth far more than it costs.

Spring storms bring a different kind of call. A nearby lightning strike or a power surge can knock out a capacitor or contactor, and the outdoor unit will hum or sit silent while the indoor fan keeps blowing warm air. Those repairs are usually quick once we track them down.

Run time also shows up in the house itself. A system that never shuts off in August is either undersized, low on refrigerant, fighting a dirty coil or losing air through the ducts under the floor. We check each of those before blaming the compressor, because in older Moundville homes the cheapest fix is often the one nobody looked at, like a duct that came loose in the crawlspace or a filter that has not been changed since spring.

What we fix in Moundville

Our Moundville calls cover air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces and heating, ductwork, thermostats and the occasional mini split. Frozen coils, refrigerant leaks, failed blower motors, tripped float switches and outdoor units that won't start make up most of the list. Every repair is quoted in writing after the diagnosis and before any part is ordered, and if a repair costs close to what a new system would, we say so. When an old unit really is done, we can walk you through what replacing the whole system looks like, from sizing to the day it goes in.

We cover the stretch of Highway 69 between Tuscaloosa and here, and a lot of our south-county trips include homes over in Fosters and Duncanville. Small businesses and churches in town get the same diagnosis-first approach for their heating and air.
