Heat Pump and AC Repair in Lake View

A heat pump in Lake View has a long job description. The town sits in the southeast corner of Tuscaloosa County, out past Brookwood toward the Bibb and Jefferson County lines, and a lot of its houses went up in subdivisions over the last couple of decades. Most of those homes came with a heat pump that cools all summer and heats all winter, and many of them are now reaching the age where they start to fail.

Builder-grade units are not bad equipment, but they are built to a price, and they tend to wear out in a predictable order: capacitors first, then fan motors and contactors, then coil leaks. When a homeowner calls about a system that is ten to fifteen years old, we already have a good idea what we are about to find, and we bring the parts for it.

Newer subdivisions, older wooded lots and their ducts

Not everything in Lake View is new. Mixed in with the subdivisions are older homes on wooded lots, some with ductwork that has been patched more than once. Even the newer houses have a duct problem of their own: flex duct run quickly through a hot attic, with tight bends and long runs that choke airflow to the rooms at the far end. Upstairs bedrooms that never cool in a two-story home are one of the most common complaints we hear in Lake View.

We check static pressure and look at the runs whenever airflow is the complaint, because a new part on the outdoor unit will not fix a crushed duct in the attic. Sometimes the fix is as simple as re-hanging a sagging run. Sometimes a room needs a larger supply line.

If a repair turns into a full replacement, it's worth checking with the town or Tuscaloosa County's offices about whether a permit applies, since that can depend on where the house sits. We will help you sort out what is needed before any work starts.

Humid air and the drain under the coil

Humidity is the other half of the story. West Alabama summers run close to 90 degrees from late May into September, and the AC runs most of the day for four months, spending as much effort pulling moisture out of the air as cooling it. A heat pump that is low on refrigerant or running with a dirty coil leaves the house sticky even when the thermostat reads cool.

All that water goes down the condensate drain, and with an attic or second-floor air handler, a clogged drain can overflow straight into a ceiling. We clear and flush the line, check the secondary pan and the float switch, and treat the line so algae does not rebuild as fast. Musty air when the system kicks on usually points to moisture sitting in the coil or ducts, and we check for mold while we are there.

What we repair in Lake View

Heat pumps are most of our Lake View work, but we also repair central air conditioners, gas and electric furnaces, air handlers, thermostats and ductwork. When the cooling side gives out in July, we start with the electrical parts and the refrigerant charge, and here's how a typical cooling repair goes from first look to final test. In winter, it's defrost problems, outdoor fans that won't run and heat strips doing the heavy lifting.

On older units, the honest answer matters most. Every repair is quoted in writing after the diagnosis and before any part is ordered, and if a repair costs close to what a new system would, we say so. On a fifteen-year-old builder unit with a leaking coil, that conversation is often the right one to have. On a five-year-old unit with a failed capacitor, it is a simple repair.

Lake View is part of our southeast-county route, and calls here often share a day with homes next door in Brookwood and Vance. That keeps the trip efficient and the wait short, and it means a follow-up visit, if a part has to be ordered, does not have to wait for a special trip out.
